Peanuts
These provide lots of energy and calories, and are one of the most commonly bought bird foods. Tits and greenfinches, robins and jays will all happily feed on peanuts. The high levels of fat are important during the winter months.
Peanuts in Shell
These are a favourite food for many wild bird species in your garden. Members of the tit family enjoy peanuts in shell in particular.
Thistle Seed (Niger)
This can be mixed with black sunflower seeds for a popular combination. Siskins, goldfinches and other small songbirds enjoy thistle seed. It resembles small grains of wild rice with a high fat and protein content. It is the seed of the niger plant native to Ethiopia, which is heated to prevent it from germinating.
Sunflower Hearts
This is a popular treat loved by all songbirds, especially tits and finches. The sunflower seed with its shell removed; there is no waste with these hearts. Sunflower hearts have high levels of oil and energy and are on every bird's wish list. Choose a feeder to keep these seeds as dry as possible because they spoil quicker than other seeds.
Wild Bird Seed
This is the ideal mix for feeding wild birds all year round. This all round favourite contains wheat, cut maize, canary seed, red dari, white millet, black rape, linseed, black sunflower seeds, and small sunflower seeds. A high quality mix which will attract a range of birds to your garden all year round.
Dried Mealworms
These are a best kept secret in wild bird feeding. They are high in energy and made from 25% fat and 50% protein. Mealworms are ideal for all birds visiting your garden. They can be fed from bird tables, the ground, or mixed with other bird seeds. Approximate content 2500 worms per tub.
Suet Cakes/Fat Balls
These have proven a popular food item to entice a variety of wild birds into your garden. Fat balls can be offered all year round and all wild birds will feed on them. They contain a mix of fat and assorted seeds.
Foreign Finch Food
This is a mix of seeds which is ideal to attract foreign finches such as waxbills, zebra finches, grassfinches and java sparrows. It will keep the finches coming back to your garden all year round. This popular low fat mixture will provide most of the essential nutrition for foreign finches. The mix contains white millet, panicum millet, red millet, canary seed, black rape, linseed, thistle (niger) seed and pin head oats.
Black Sunflower Seeds
These are a high energy wild bird seed, rich in nourishing oil. They have a softer shell than normal striped sunflower seeds and are easier to eat for the large variety of birds they attract. Black sunflower seeds offer a high oil value which is irresistible to wild birds who will seek out this wonderful food.
Striped Sunflower Seed
These are larger than black sunflower seeds and have a thicker shell. This makes them harder to eat for small birds, but bigger birds such as cardinals, jays and woodpeckers enjoy them. Of the smaller birds, chickadees, titmice and nuthatches can easily open the shells. Containing protein, carbohydrates and fat, they are extremely nutritional.
Suet Bird Feed
Birds are extremely appreciative of suet bird feed during the winter months when other food sources are limited. High in energy and fat, these are perfect for keeping the birds pleased during the cold. Suet tends to attract insect-eating birds like woodpeckers, chickadees, wrens and nuthatches. Birds can feed on this all year round. Be careful to keep suet bird feed in the shade during the summer as it may go rancid.
