Feeding Habits
Birds can be attracted all year round with a regular bird feeding regime. However, it is through the winter months when natural bird food supplies are at their lowest and bird food is most important.
Once you have started feeding birds in your garden you will find you quickly develop a resident crowd who will return daily for regular meals. Therefore, once you have started feeding birds, they will become dependent on your food source, particularly in the winter.
Because of their high metabolic rates, birds must consume more food in proportion to their size than most animals. Bird food can be put out all year round, but quantities can be reduced from the beginning of April. In order to keep enjoying your garden visitors, offer food throughout the seasons.
In the summer, be careful with peanuts on an open table because baby birds will have difficulty digesting them. Peanuts in a bird nut feeder will not be a problem because the adult bird is forced to eat them on the spot or break them up.
Wild birds need feeding the least in the autumn because of the plentiful supply of nuts and seeds in the countryside. However, sensible amounts of food should be put out for them should you wish to maintain a routine with your garden birds.
It is best to maintain a dependable and nutritious food source for wild birds throughout the year. You may want to vary the amounts of bird food according to the seasons. An intelligent and responsible feeding regime throughout the seasonal calendar will help support and strengthen a most beautiful and important part of our wildlife.
