Feeder Hygiene and Cleaning

Bird feeder cleaning is an extremely important part of bird feeding. Disease can be spread through bird droppings on feeders, wet seed and on hulls below the feeder. Fungus can grow if there is damp bird feed and debris.

The instigation of a regular cleaning program for your bird feeder is essential. Always give the feeder a good shake when refilling, this will dislodge any compacted clumps of wet bird feed. These if left could create an unhealthy feeding environment. If possible, clear away any husks and dropped seeds from under and around the feeding station. If you have a bird table, try and move it throughout the year to let the grass beneath recover.

Put only as much seed as you think is necessary, if there is too much this may attract vermin that may visit the area at night. If there is no food available they will move on.

To remove stubborn accumulations of seed on wooden feeding stations use a stiff brush. A round headed brush is better for cleaning enclosed or round feeder types. A simple solution can be used to successfully clean your bird feeder. Fill a bucket with warm water; add a small amount of detergent and four cups of white distilled vinegar. Avoid using harsh chemicals. Always remember to rinse the feeder well to get rid of any traces of soap, and dry thoroughly. A wet feeder only creates problems for you. Overcrowding at feeders can be a common cause of spreading disease. Provide an additional feeder if this happens.
