Bird Suet Feeders
Suet feeders offer birds a tasty treat which is high in energy and calories. Many bird lovers make their own bird suet 'puddings' by melting fat and adding seeds. A good time to start putting out a bird suet feeder is late winter to early spring. Birds begin to locate feeders at this time, as wild food sources are limited. They tend to become active, building nests and locating available food.
Suet is fat from around the kidneys and loins of cattle and sheep. It is rendered, meaning it has been melted and re-hardened, and stays solid even in warm weather, although is best kept in the shade during the summer as it can go rancid. A suet feeder is any wire cage or bag which is hung to attract birds to your garden. Some people smear suet in tree knotholes or in pine cones. However, a wire suet feeder is best as they are less messy. Locating a suet bird feeder in your garden can also help to discourage starlings.
